Things that blew my mind, part 2

From Boing Boing, brought to my attention by Dan Boehl, this is what Super Mario would look like as a first-person shooter game:

Mike Meginnis owes me his thoughts on why side-scrolling video games are more fun to watch than FPS. Stay tuned.

  1. It never occurred to me that Mario might be walking on a "beam"; I always pictured, you know, the ground. Makes sense, though.

  2. I saw it as the ground too, but it doesn't really make sense that you can fall off the ground.

  3. But he never falls toward you or away from you, falling behind the beam. He only falls off cliffs...in the ground.

Actually, I'm going to continue to support my theory: If he were on a beam, you'd have to make sure he didn't fall off the sides. But you don't. So it's ground.

  4. When Mario dies he falls off the beam/ground, then off the screen, right? But yeah, he can only move in one dimension in the side-scrolling version. There is no 3-D.

  5. To clarify I think he does fall toward you when he dies (he passes in front of the ground/beam/whatever).

  6. This is great, thanks! (Re FPS's: they used to make me motion-sick as a kid, so I stopped playing them. I don't know how common a reaction this is -- but, e.g., I've almost never been carsick.)

  7. I've heard that films shot with hand-held cameras make a lot of people motion-sick.
